On the demand side, the ecological footprint measures the ecological assets that a given population requires to produce the natural resources it consumes (including plant-based food and fiber products, livestock and fish products, timber and other forest products, space for urban infrastructure) and to absorb its waste, especially carbon emissions. The Ecological Footprint tracks the use of six categories of productive surface areas: cropland, grazing land, fishing grounds, built-up land, forest area, and carbon demand on land.On the supply side, a city, state or nation’s biopacity represents the productivity of its ecological assets (including cropland, grazing land, forest land, fishing grounds, and built-up land). These areas, especially if left unharvested, can also absorb much of the waste we generate, especially our carbon emissions.

The ecological footprint is the impact a person or a community makes on the environment, expressed as the land needed to sustain their natural resources. Ecological overshoot is when populations needs exceeds the long term capacity of it's natural environment. Overshoot is when there is a drop in population density. This can be caused if the natural land is not producing enough fertile soil, so no crops can grow. This can mean that people move away from that area, or if there is no other source of food, some of the population could die. Or, animals may die off or migrate somewhere else if there is not enough land and space left in their natural habitat due to human impact on their land. Overpopulation for humans can also drop the population density is one place. If there is not enough space for humans in one place, many will move somewhere else, making more space n the place they previously were.
