In 1830, the Indian Removal Act was signed into law by president Andrew Jackson. In this agreement, Cherokee Indians who lived in modern day Georgia agreed to give up their land to the federal government. In return, these Native Americans received land in Oklahoma. This ended in tragedy, as Native Americans were forced to march over 1,000 miles in horrible conditions to their new lands. This is known as the Trail of Tears, as thousands of Cherokee died on the journey.
