The topic sentence is the central or nuclear idea of the paragraph, that is, a kind of summary of the point to be explored in the paragraph that follows. Each paragraph has its own topic sentence, which is to say that you should not write paragraphs with more than one nuclear idea.
An example of a topic sentence is: The word "horror" derives from the Latin horrere: to make the hair shiver. That is, horripilar: horrify, erect the hair, shiver.
