Magellan was the first person to circumnavigate the world. Well, one of his boats was, he was killed in the Philippines by the natives because he attacked them with his men (There is a whole background story that I won't elaborate into). :) He set off from Spain in 1519 and his last boat, the Victoria, reached Spain in 1522. It was the only boat of three that returned.
Vasco da Gama was the fist European to reach India by sea. He sailed all the way from Portugal to India going around Africa.
