The primary reason for this competition was that land in Europe was incredibly limited, meaning that those who claimed land in the New World could make huge profits on exports.
The reason why European nations compete with each other to build colonies in North America was to claim resources and get more land which given them more power.
Explanation.
The Europeans nations were very powerful so they were fighting between each other so that they may gain territories and riches which would give them more powers over the world. For an example they they new that when they gain more colonies they will gain more resources because they will get raw materials cheaper from those colonies than in their countries. They used their powerful military invasion during the colonization.
