The major purpose of the Marshall Plan was to provide aid for European countries which had been damaged (both physically and economically). The support was coming from the United States in 1948 and was intended to repair war-devastated regions, remove trade barriers, modernize industry, make Europe prosperous again and stop the spread of Communism.
