The main reason why the government allowed monopolies to operate without strong regulations during the Gilded Age was because they believed that the proliferation of monopolies was good for the American economy. They believed that these big businesses were more likely to bring wealth into the country, and they did not pay attention to the many problems that monopolies can bring to an economy.
