bromothymol blue is an indicator solution that is yellow in color for solutions with a pH of 6.0 or lower and blue in solutions with a pH of 7.6 or higher. Since citric acid is an acid, the pH was lower than 6.0 and the solution turned yellow. Pure citric acid has a pH of 2.2.
