Sympatric speciation refers to the process that occur when population of a specie which share the same habitat become reproductively isolated from each other, that is, they can not partner again to give birth to offspring. 
Sympartric speciation normally occur through polyploidy. Sympatric speciation is rare in animals; it commonly occurs among plants probably because it easier for plants to self fertilize than animals.
