Softball is a variant of baseball played with a larger ball. There are three types of softball. In the most common type, slow-pitch softball, fastpitch softball, and modified softball. The first known softball game was played in Chicago, Illinois at the Farragut Boat Club on Thanksgiving Day, 1887.
Despite the name, the ball used in softball is not soft.
