During the Cold War, the US and USSR (Soviet Union) were mainly competing in the "space race". They both wanted to be the first ones out there, and possibly take control of whatever was there.
Once the USSR launched Sputnik, the US knew they had to improve. In 1958, NASA was founded, and soon Apollo 11 was launched and led to the first moon landing.
