The earliest records of prehistoric rock art were found in the Altamira Cave in Spain approximately 150 years ago by Spanish pharmacist, botanist and archaeologist Marcelino Sanz De Sautuola. At the time they were discovered, scholars did not believe in the authenticity of images and questioned the ability of primitive man to create some kind of art. However, in the twentieth century, those paintings and engravings found were accepted as realized by prehistoric man.
It is now claimed that rock art began with the arrival of Cro-Magnon man (primitive homo sapiens population) in Europe. The oldest paintings are located in the Chauvet Cave in France and are estimated to have been created some 32,000 years ago.
