In a simple answer, The King taxed the American Colonies for it's defense in this war. The American colonies felt that the protection was owed to them as they were English colonials living in the American colonies. This further escalated to "taxation without representation". The colonies felt that they shouldn't be taxed extra for a war they fought in.
