Bartolomé de las Casas was a Spanish colonist during the 16th century who was also a historian. He was entrusted as the first resident bishop of Chiapas and was officially appointed as "Protector of the Indians". Las Casas writes a lot, his writings are widely known. His most famous works are “A Short Account of Destruction of the Indies” and “Historia de Las Indias”. This article tells the first decade of West Indies occupation. Las Casas illustrated how the atrocities committed by the invaders against the local community.
Coming as a colonizer, Las Casas initially also participated in the occupation. Yet, finally, he felt compassion and began to oppose the violence perpetrated by the invaders against Native Americans.
In 1515 he released his Indian slaves, advocated before King Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor in the name of human rights. In his early writings, Las Casas suggested the use of African slaves instead of the natives in their colonies. But later on, he withdrew his thoughts in the early works. He realized that both forms of slavery were just as wrong.
Seven years later, he tried to propose a new kind of diplomatic colonialism on the coast of Venezuela, yet it failed. Las Casas then entered the Dominican Order and became a monk, leaving behind a decade of worldly life. Then he traveled to Central America as a missionary.
