"Start small and build" was a main technique in the Chinese strategy throughout the Korean War.
It involved gradually escalating demands, beginning with prisoners of war being asked to state seemingly inconsequential anti-American or pro-Communist statements, to then push them further until they would convince themselves they were actual collaborators.
