Here's the formal way to do it with algebra.

You called the mystery number "what", so let's give it the nickname of 'W'.

You said that 10 is ten times as much as 'what'.

Ten times as much as 'what' is  10W, so
                                                                      10  =  10W.

Divide each side of that equation by 10:    1  = W

and there's the answer.  10 is ten times as much as ' 1'.

10 is 10 times as much as what

10 = 10 times of what number

We need to find 10 times what number gives us 10

Let the unknown number be x

10 = 10 times x

10 = 10 x

To solve for x, we divide by 10 on both sides

[tex]\frac{10}{10}  = \frac{10x}{10}[/tex]

1 = x

So unknown number is 1

10 = 10 times 1

10 is 10 times as much as 1
