Few spanish settlers could be persuaded to settle the colony of Florida.

Iin 1513,  the Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon explored a mass of land  on the American continent which would come to be named La Florida, in honour of Pascua Florida (Feast of Flowers), which is the name given to Spain's Easter time celebration.

Spanish Florida is the Spanish territory of La Florida, which constituted the first major European land claim and attempted settlement in North America during the European Age of Discovery.
