This can be solved using the properties of equality:
$8/9=(30+a)/45$
Cross Multiply.
$8*45=9*(30+a)$
Simplify.
$360=9a+270$
Add -270 to both sides.
$(360)+(-270)=(9a+270)+(-270)$
Simplify.
$90=9a$
Divide both sides by 9.
$(90)/9=(9a)/9$
Simplify.
$10=a$
$a=10$
