Awesome question! The particle accelerator is basically a mechanism that alters the speed (in terms of frequency levels) atoms (along with its subatomic particles) near to the exact speed of 300,000 km. per second (the speed of light, as a result). Particle accelerators are actually very commonly used in our daily lives, too. However, the really cool part of this mechanism is that if modified to a greater, more powerful extent, could lead to subatomic particles that can reach the speed of photons (light particles), and actually have the capability to disturb the space time continuum, although that would be really bad. However, positively, one with such a mechanism could time travel, perhaps!
