-This was slightly surprising for me to learn

Answer:

 India

Explanation:

Despite being born in India, Buddhism is practiced today in isolated parts of the country.

In the middle of the sixth century, Indian Buddhism began to decline as a result of the invasions of white Huns from Central Asia, who invaded northwest India, causing the destruction of countless Buddhist monasteries.

From 750, there was a revival of Buddhism, when the Pala dynasty ruled in northeastern India until the twelfth century, supporting the great Buddhist monastic centers, including that of Nalanda. However, from the twelfth century, Buddhism entered a definitive decline due to several factors. Among these were Hindu revivalism, which manifested itself with figures such as Adi Shankara and the invading Muslims of the 12th and 13th centuries.

One of the most striking events in the decline of Indian Buddhism occurred in 1193 with the destruction of Nalanda by Turkic Muslim peoples led by Muhammad Quilji. In the late 12th century, after the Islamic conquest of the Buddhist bulwark of Bihar, Buddhists ceased to be a significant presence in India. For the disappearance of Buddhism also contributed the Hindu revivalism expressed through the Advaita Vedanta school and the Bhakti movement.
