• The headright system was firstly operated in Virginia. The new neighborhood at Jamestown was eager for more tobacco agriculturalists. In 1618, the Virginia Company presented free land to incomers. Most of the incomers to come were indentured servants—people who were needed to work for 5-7 years period of time, in order to pay back a debt.

• In many cases, a rich person would protect a headright and remunerate the way for an indentured servant to move to the settlement and labor the land on his behalf. By doing so the Englishman would obtain prosperity and lands in the New World deprived of actually having to undergo a risky journey throughout the ocean, or do any labor himself. These patrons propelled many indentured servants, thus obtaining most tracts of land. Most of the early incomers in the settlements were indentured servants.

• The headright system enabled poorer individuals to come to the New World who then would not have been capable to afford it. The system was extremely crucial to the development of the colonies, particularly in the South. Tobacco farming, specifically, needed huge tracts of land and many laborers. The headright system enabled this to grow relatively quickly.
