Benny Cat
by Tirzah Tyler

"I'll miss you," Sara told Marissa while she gave her a long hug.
"We'll see each other at school, silly," Marissa said with a smile while she pulled away from her friend's hug.
Benny, Marissa's gray striped cat, meowed and gently wiped his cheek against the wall of Marissa's apartment building.
"You'll have your hands full with Benny inside the moving van, won't you?" Sara asked.
With a carefree laugh, Marissa declared, "We're not going to take Benny with us. We're moving to a rent house that doesn't allow pets."
Sara gasped. "You mean—you're just going to leave him here?"
Marissa nodded and said, "Sure. We got him when we lived here, so he belongs here. That's what my mom said."
The thought of Marissa and her family abandoning Benny made Sara feel sick to her stomach. "Can I have him?" Sara asked.
Marissa shrugged her shoulders and said, "Sure, why not?" Before she cheerfully skipped away, she added, "See you at school next month!"
Benny meowed and continued to wipe his cheek against the building's brick wall. He reminded Sara of Patches, a cat that she used to have. Sara squatted down and motioned for Benny to come to her. He meowed again, trotted toward her, and sniffed her hands.
She scooped him into her arms as gently as she could. "Would you like to come home with me and be my cat?" she whispered.
Benny settled into Sara's embrace and purred loudly in reply.
Slowly, Sara walked a block and a half to her house with Benny, and she hoped that her parents would let her keep him.
