Ethical persuasion or the right and moral use of pathos in rhetoric is not a simple topic that can be decided in a few sentences, but it should be stressed that the function of pathos (or the use of emotion in persuasion), is not of itself unethical. However, as a rule of thumb, a speaker should not make use of this oratory technique to exploit others´ emotions in order to gain personal benefits. Others´ emotions are to be respected and, as much as possible, a speaker should aim at being sympathetic to them.  

Persuasion should be based on the use of facts and realistic ideologies rather than being emotional. Contents that are applied as elements of persuasion should appeal to logic other than emotion.

If an author or a speaker manipulates the emotion of his audience instead of using the principles of logos and ethos to ensure that they buy his ideas, such a speaker or author can be said to have deceptively exploit the emotions of his audience for the benefits of his own party.

Such persuasions are always based on faulty assumptions, sweet words and lies to manipulate the reasoning of the target people. This form of deceptive persuasion is unfair, and does not appeal to logical and ethical principles.
