The United States entered World War II in 1941 after the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor by Japan on December 7, 1941. The attack damaged or destroyed over 20 American ships and killed over 2,400 military personnel. The United States declared war on Japan in response, and Germany and Italy declared war on the United States a few days later.
