The group called itself Indian's of All Tribes" and was
soon joined by more supporters from across the country.
In all, about 100 American Indians occupyed the island in a
demonstrashun that lasted until june 11 1971. One of there
purposes were to draw attention to the plite of the american
indian. They demanded compensation for the many treaties
breaked by the U.S. government. Referring specific to the
1868 Treaty of fort laramie (a peace agreament between the
US government and the sioux), they ask for all abandoned
retired, or unused fedural lands to be return to the tribes
they had been stealed from.
