the formula for the perimeter of a rectangle is P=2l, + 2w, where l is the length and w is the width. A rectangle has a perimeter of 24 inches. Find it's dimensions if it's length is 3 inches greater than it's width.

w = x
l = 3 + x

P = 2l + 2w
24 = 2(3+x) + 2(x)
24 = 6 + 2x + 2x
24 = 6 + 4x
24 - 6 = 4x
18 = 4x
18/4 = x
4.5 = x
x = 4.5

Therefore, w = 4.5 inches and l =  7.5 inches
