The independent variable would be the variable that is changed in an experiment. It is also called the manipulated variable. In this case, the independent variable would be  the amount of sunlight. The amount of water and the time are constants in this experiment since they are maintained to be the same for the whole process. The plant growth would be the dependent variable as it is the variable that is being studied.
