The Renaissance is a period in European history between the 14th and 17th century. There were important developments in the fields of art, literature, and science, as the predominant idea among all fields was that "Man is the measure of all things."

Although the principal intellectual exponents supported the Roman Catholic Church, there would be a gradual shift in their views through time. The ideas of scholars such as Erasmus and Lorenza Valla would pave the way for the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century.

The general consensus was that Monarchies throughout Europe were in control of the Church, promoting outdated practices that were hindering the overall development of human beings.
