The woodwind family of instruments uses a divided air column to produce sound. Flutes and reed instruments are two main types of woodwind. The way they produce sounds is the way they are differentiate from other instruments. Saxophone, a bassoon and piccolo are examples of this instrument. The way the the sound of flute is produce is through directing a focused stream of air below the edge of the hole. While the reed instrument is through focusing air into the mouthpiece then causes reed to vibrate.
