The American Civil War is seen as a decisive event in the history of the United States. At the time, it was a young country, which led an isolatinist policy and was still mostly agricultural.

By the end of the Civil War, the hope was that the both the North and the South will be united and the African American population would immediately have the same rights as those of the Whites.

This, however did not happen. For almost a 100 years after the end of the Civil War, African Americans could not not vote, could not live or eat in the same place as the Whites and in many cases were tortured and murdered by the KKK.
