Metamorphic rocks are formed from pre-existing rocks and have been changed by extreme heat and pressure. Differential stress can be shear or compressive. Extreme pressure compresses rocks and this can cause foliation and sometimes a change in the mineral composition of rocks. Examples of metamorphic rocks include gneiss, slate and phyllite.
