One key similarity is that they both functioned as colonies for the European powers that sent people to colonize them and they existed like that for years and years before they gained their independence. A key difference is that the south and central American colonies had a much more institutionalized religion because of the strength of Catholicism in Spain, while the north American colonies had a personal view of religion thanks to doctrines established in the First Great awakening and similar sets of ideas.
