The factors that caused Rome to plunge into civil wars and weakened the Republic were:

Power and control. Powerful Roman families desired to gain control at any cost. Assassinations were the order of the day. There were some Roman Emperors that lasted very few ruling the Empire. It debilitated the social structure of Rome.

Ambition. The Roman Empire was so ambitious. Its hunger for more territories made them always be involved in conquering wars. The Empire expansion reached so far Rome that in those far away places the Empire could not sustain its armies and their presence.

Egotism. Roman soldiers were more loyal to their commanders than the same Empire. This means that loyalty was to the person, the leader, more than Rome. Battles among troops started and this debilitated the Roma army.

Killing. Those differences and political control generated wars among the Romans and many people were killed.

Patricians land. There was a Land legislation to take land from the Patricians to give it to the Military men after sixteen years of service in the Roman Army. This was one of the reasons for the civil war.


Factors that caused Rome to plunge into civil wars are the difference which began to grow even greater between the rich and the poor then some reformers tried to give land to the poor but the rich people of Rome felt threatened by that killing the reformers. They weaken the republic when the people's loyalty was able to shift from the Republic to the generals who had conquered the land.

Rome was a republic, in the first century. Power is in the Senate’s hands, who was elected by Roman citizens. Yet, the difference started to grow even greater between the rich and the poor. Some reformers tried to promise land to the poor, but the rich Romans in the Senate felt threatened by it and then killed the reformers. Roman generals who conquered the land became power-hungry. When the army was formed, the loyalty of the people shifted from the Republic to the generals who had conquered the land.

 

The civil war finally broke out between a general named Sulla who was supported by the Patricians against a general named Marius who was supported by the Plebeians. This civil war turmoil resulted in economic difficulties. Expansion and conflict that occur, paving the way for strong leaders to take power.
