The Shoe tree was tragically cut down by a group of vandals in 2010, and the police have been unable to find their whereabouts since then. However, in 2017, some local citizens started hanging footwear on a new cottonwood tree nearby, designating it as the new Shoe tree, and since then, tourists have been visiting this tree. Popular folklore says that a couple living below the tree had an argument, and the wife threatened to leave the husband as a result of it. The man threw her shoes on the trees, saying that she would have to do it barefoot, thus preventing her from leaving. Storming out of the house, he went to a nearby bar, where the friendly bartender advised him to go back home and reconcile with his wife. He returned home and settled his differences with his wife, and after a few years, they had a child. The couple took their child’s shoes and threw them on the tree as a sign of good luck for their family. Since then, the tradition has continued among the people and has spread to tourists alike. The locals believe that tying footwear to the branches of the tree can bring good luck and reconcile differences among close people and friends. The tradition involves in tying one’s footwear to the branches of the tree, and driving the rest of the destination ahead, barefoot.
