Fossils found on different continents provided evidence that they were once joined together. For example, identical plant and animal fossils were discovered on landmasses now separated by oceans. This suggested that these continents were once connected, as the fossils couldn't have traveled across vast distances of water. For instance, fossils of the same reptiles and plants were found in South America and Africa. This helped Alfred Wegener propose his theory of continental drift, suggesting that continents were once part of a single landmass before drifting apart over time.
