One rotten orange can spoil the whole basket full of oranges .Why?

Once an orange has rotten, it would mean the rot can potentially spread to the other oranges since there are most likely organisms present in the orange. These organisms as they reproduce will spread to the other oranges and decompose them in pursuit of food and resources.
