The policy of containment established by president Truman in 1946 and defined the approach in foreign policy that the US adopted after the end of WWII. Moreover, it set the playingfield for the longlasting international confrontation known as Cold War and for the division of the world in two blocs during the second half of the 20th century.
Containment was a geopolitical strategy that aimed to limit the expansion of communism, which started to be considered the main enemy of the US. It was adopted as a response to the increase of the influence of the Soviet Union in Eastern Europe, China, Korea, Africa, Vietnam, etc. The strategy was divided into two lines of action: detente and rollback.
