Why is the tunica intima, the innermost layer of arteries and veins, made of epithelial cells?

Epithelial cells is known as durable cells. The innermost layer of arteries and veins will be in direct contact with the blood flow. Having an epithelial cell can protect the blood vessel from the damage of the pressure. Damage to epithelial cells can cause atherosclerosis.
