The first African Americans who fought for the Union during the Civil War were paid less than white soldiers.
Obviously, at the time, racism and discrimination were still very prevalent all across the United States. So most white people wouldn't be happy if they found out that black people, whom they considered to be 'lesser humans' were paid the same amount as them. This was the reason why black soldiers were paid less for the same job they did as white soldiers.
