A model of an atom is important in understanding chemistry and in explaining the behavior of matter because it is the components of the atoms that gave rise to the different properties exhibited by the elements especially the electrons. From the model of the atom, we can predict the how would the elements or molecules behave or interact with each other. Also, it is the from the smallest unit of matter that we can actually see what is going on with the substance undergoing a particular process. You would see the arrangement of the subatomic particles and its effect on the overall structure.
