I think the correct answer would be the last option. Hippocrates maintained that mental illness was caused by imbalances of vital body fluids. It was during 400 BC where Hippocrates tried to separate religion from medicine by theorizing that a deficiency or lack/excess of the important bodily fluids would be the cause for mental and physical disorders or illnesses. He characterized these essential fluid to blood, phlegm, black bile and yellow bile. He did not conform to the thinking that having a mental illness is a shameful happening or that these mentally ill people are to be held responsible for the behavior they are showing.
