After you look at the poetic devices in a poem, you should determine the tone in the poem. The tone is the attitude of a writer toward a subject or an audience. Generally, it is conveyed through word choice or the viewpoint of the writer with respect to a particular subject.
The fact is that all pieces of writing refer to a central theme or subject matter and the way in which the writer approaches said theme and subject matter is the tone.
