With the election of President Abraham Lincoln, an anti-slavery activist, the South felt that their way of life and economic growth, which at the time was based entirely on slavery was being threatened, and therefore seceded in order for the anti-slavery laws that were imminent to be passed, to be avoided and to keep their slaves as a result.
