If an ovum is not fertilized ESTROGEN production decreases and the LINING OF THE WOMB is shed. As a woman of child bearing age is approaching ovulation, the body increases the production of estrogen hormone, which causes the lining of the uterus to thicken and which also provide a sperm-friendly environment. If fertilization do not take place the body reduces the production of estrogen and the thickened uterus lining will be shed.

Further Explanation:
Female reproductive organ are found in the pelvis region which release egg during menstruation cycle. The menstruation cycle starts with the day one of first menstruation and last at the first day of next menstruation cycle.
The cycle includes three phases;
• The follicular phase
• The ovulatory phase
• The luteal phase
The luteal phase is the part in which change in the hormonal level and fertilization of the egg take place. It will last for twelve to fourteen days. If the egg is fertilized by a sperm, it will attach to the lining of the uterus and the placenta develops. If the ova is not get fertilized with sperm than the lining of the uterus sheds and remove during menstruation. Corpus luteum is formed once the ovum is released from ovary. It helps in secreting the hormones estrogen and progesterone. If the ova don’t get fertilized than the corpus luteum will reduce in size and die and become a small piece of lump. The end of the menstruation cycle resulted in decrease in estrogen and progesterone level and the decrease in progesterone level leads to the shedding of the lining of uterus which is no longer needed.
