Following the war, Black Codes remained restrictive yet were adjusted to allow some "rights" such as African American children can go to school, the former slaves could testify in court, sue and be sued, and African Americans could legally be married. The Black Codes are the laws that denied almost all legal rights to the newly freed slaves which was passed down by the southern states after the Civil War.
