Due to the fact of Luke growing up on the beach, and only ever wearing sandals, he would consider sandals to be the prototype of shoes. This is because the definition of prototype is something that is the first, or a design of something. Luke's experience would show that he has only ever seen sandals, and therefore he would consider them to be the first design or type of shoe he ever saw. If he were to see sneakers, he would consider these to be an improvement upon his original sandals.
