For starters, women had to start working because the men couldn't find jobs that could earn enough or couldn't find any jobs at all. If they injured themselves they would have to keep working while injured, so women had to join the workforce to help their husbands. The government started meddling more and introducing legislature to prevent companies from exploiting people. The new deal created things that created state owned companies where people could work as well as introduce things like social security and welfare programs.
