The western part of the United States is geologically much more active than the other parts of the country. This is due to the geological activity in the region which is caused by the subduction of the heavier oceanic Pacific tectonic plate under the lighter North American tectonic plate. Because of this, the pressure, temperatures, magma, gases, form the mantle are able to come to the surface, and one of the results is the hydrothermal activity.
