Paul Gauguin and Cezanne developed post-impressionist art in painting and emphasized abstract qualities and symbolic content and bold colors to express themselves. They tended to use geometric forms and unusual or arbitrary color in opposition to the impressionists which used natural colors and lighting. Post impressionism was mainly a French art form.
