The principal theme of "A Poison Tree" is not an anger only but also how the subduing of anger results to the raising of anger.

Adding to it, at the time when the speaker conceal his anger from his enemy, the anger starts increase, just like a tree. The fact that the tree is "poison" and when we ignore our anger we also poisoned.

The poem deals with the another darker side of the human psyche. The speaker also inform us about how they fail to communicate their wrath to their foe and how this continues to increase until it develops into poisonous hatred.
